Area Guide
One of the Costa del Sol's most exclusive addresses. Local knowledge from the people who live next door.
If Rio Real is one of Marbella's best-kept secrets, Los Monteros is its most coveted address. Stretching from Rio Real in the west to Alicate Playa and El Rosario in the east, Los Monteros spans some of the finest beachside real estate in Spain, world-class golf on the mountainside, and elevated villas with views that stop you in your tracks. Wide sandy beaches, an eco-reserve of natural dunes, five-star hotels, private golf resorts and some of Marbella's most exclusive residential communities — all within ten minutes of Marbella town centre.
There are prestigious addresses across Marbella, but Los Monteros occupies a category of its own. This is not a busy tourist area. There are no public footfall zones, no crowded promenades. What you find instead is privacy, security and calm, combined with a location that puts you minutes from everything Marbella has to offer.
The beaches are wide, sandy and rarely crowded. The residential communities are immaculately maintained. The villas on the beachside are among the most beautiful on the Costa del Sol — many in traditional Andalusian style, with mature private gardens that take decades to establish.
It attracts a specific kind of buyer: one who values quality over visibility, and privacy over proximity to the party.
Los Monteros sits on Marbella's eastern edge, stretching between Rio Real to the west and Alicate Playa and El Rosario to the east. The area divides naturally into three distinct zones: the beachside, the mountainside golf resorts, and the elevated residential communities of Los Altos de Los Monteros above.
The Senda Litoral coastal boardwalk stretches from Marbella all the way to the western tip of Los Monteros, connecting the area to Rio Real and Marbella's seafront on foot or by bicycle.
Los Monteros is not a single development. It's a collection of distinct communities, each with its own character and appeal.
The beaches of Los Monteros are among the cleanest and least crowded on this stretch of the Costa del Sol. The Senda Litoral boardwalk connects the western edge of Los Monteros to Rio Real and onwards to Marbella — perfect for morning walks, cycling or simply watching the kite surfers from the shore.
Los Monteros has quietly assembled a restaurant and beach club scene that rivals anywhere on the Costa del Sol — without the chaos of Puerto Banús.
Kite Surfing — The eastern beaches around Los Monteros enjoy some of the best wind conditions on the Costa del Sol, making this stretch a magnet for kite surfers and paddleboarders. El Kiosko Kitesurf is the natural hub.
Hiking — The hills behind Rio Real and Los Monteros contain some genuinely rewarding walking routes — quiet, dramatic and completely off the tourist trail. The Rio Real river walk is particularly beautiful in spring and autumn. For the ambitious, it is even possible to hike from Los Monteros up to the whitewashed village of Ojén. Not for the fainthearted, but the views are extraordinary.
Equestrian — Los Monteros is home to Hacienda Monte Marina Club Hípico, one of the area's finest equestrian centres, alongside the well-regarded Centro Hípico El Repique. For horse lovers, this combination is a significant draw — and one of the details that makes this corner of Marbella genuinely unique.
Families relocating to Los Monteros have outstanding schooling options within minutes. Within five minutes: English International College, Las Chapas Bilingual School and Colegio Alborán. Within ten minutes: the public schools of Elvira, offering an excellent Spanish state education.
As local residents ourselves, we can speak from personal experience about the schools, the communities around them, and which options tend to suit different families. It is the kind of knowledge that does not appear in any brochure.
Two exceptional golf resorts on the mountainside, with Rio Real Golf just to the west. Few areas on the Costa del Sol can match this combination of course quality and residential setting.
Excellent private and international schools within five minutes, safe residential streets, and beaches that are calm enough for children year-round.
Beachside villas in Los Monteros are among the highest-performing holiday rental assets on the Costa del Sol. Plots in Los Altos offer a different opportunity for buyers looking to develop in a genuinely premium location.
No public footfall areas, immaculately maintained communities, and a setting that feels genuinely apart from busier Marbella — while remaining minutes away from everything.
The Hospital Costa del Sol, year-round supermarket access, excellent outdoor pursuits and ten-minute proximity to Marbella make everyday life here remarkably well-balanced.
